Our History and Commitment to Transparency

From 1984 to 2021, SFBU operated under the name Northwestern Polytechnic University. 
As the university grew and the higher education landscape continued to change, a new leadership team was brought in to better align the institution's governance and academic quality with our mission to serve today’s learners.

2023 was a year of transformation. With intentional changes in leadership and academic practices, San Francisco Bay University marked a new chapter centered on accountability and clarity. Rather than distancing ourselves from the past, we treat it as a point of learning that informs how we operate today with a strong commitment to innovation, accessibility and continuous improvement.

San Francisco Bay University was founded in 1984, originally as Northwestern Polytechnic University, with a mission to expand access to career-connected, applied education, particularly aligned with engineering and technology.
