Our Story
Who We Are and Where We’re Going
From 1984 to 2021, SFBU operated under the name Northwestern Polytechnic University.
As the university grew and the higher education landscape continued to change, a new leadership team was brought in to better align the institution's governance and academic quality with our mission to serve today’s learners.
2023 was a year of transformation. With intentional changes in leadership and academic practices, San Francisco Bay University marked a new chapter centered on accountability and clarity. Rather than distancing ourselves from the past, we treat it as a point of learning that informs how we operate today with a strong commitment to innovation, accessibility and continuous improvement.
San Francisco Bay University is known for accessible, workforce-aligned education designed to support student success from enrollment through graduation. From programs like the MBA Pro+ to our Three-Year Bachelor’s Degree Programs and applied learning opportunities, SFBU focuses on outcomes that matter today and tomorrow. This approach includes:
Learning that supports long-term student success, including financial and life literacy, professional communication, interpersonal development and career preparation beyond just technical skills.
Ethical, practical integration of artificial intelligence into coursework, preparing students to use emerging technologies in the workplace.
Affordable tuition and housing rates paired with generous scholarships.
Flexible options such as Three-Year Bachelor’s Degree Programs that reduce time and cost to completion.
Academic programs shaped by industry input and regional workforce needs, paired with post-graduation opportunities through employer partners across technology and business.
Clear, inclusive admissions pathways that prioritize access and readiness to learn.
Hands-on, project-based coursework where students work in diverse teams and produce professional-level deliverables through programs like Innovate Bay, SFBU’s business incubator.
A Neighborhood Campus model designed to foster connection, collaboration and support while keeping students close to Silicon Valley’s innovation ecosystem.

San Francisco Bay University is a private, nonprofit institution accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), an institutional accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For students, accreditation matters. It proves that our academic programs meet established standards for quality and rigor, that credits are recognized and that degrees carry long-term value.
Accreditation also reflects ongoing accountability, not a one-time designation. SFBU operates in compliance with all federal, state and accreditor requirements, with programs and institutional practices reviewed regularly through WSCUC processes and ongoing oversight.
Our accreditation is only one component of a broader commitment to delivering education that is of the highest quality and centered on student success. At SFBU, undergraduate and graduate programs are designed with clear learning outcomes and reviewed regularly to ensure relevance and effectiveness. Additionally, faculty participate in ongoing professional development through the Center for Empowerment and Pedagogical Innovation (CEPI) and are trained in SFBU’s PERS (Personalized, Experiential, Relational, Student-Centered) framework.
SFBU is proud to be a challenger in higher education — reimagining what student outcomes look like to expand access and opportunity. Rather than relying on rankings or exclusivity, we measure success through career readiness and preparation for life beyond the classroom.
We keep what works and move beyond what doesn’t in higher education. Under new leadership, we’ve built a model that reflects the realities of today’s world and the needs of our students. That means Bayhawks graduate ready to thrive at the intersection of technology and creativity, building momentum from day one into long-term success.
As higher education evolves, SFBU remains focused on advancing equitable, student-centered pathways to college access and success. This includes ongoing improvements in teaching and learning, responsible innovation in emerging technologies, continued development of accelerated and cost-conscious degree options, and growing partnerships with industry and community organizations.
