On September 23, 2026, SFBU's Learning Resource Center (LRC) looked a little different: fewer screens and a lot more conversation, creativity, and connection.
Digital Detox Day invited students, faculty, and staff to step away from their devices and spend time doing wonderfully analog things—painting, crocheting, making crafts and bookmarks, reading, debating, making food, and simply talking to one another. "Speed Friending" led by the SFBU Student Success team's Margaux John and Beth Tsang gave students a playful way to meet someone new, while the Calming station led by Professor Jason Hotchkiss created space to slow down and connect.
Student Diana DubonRamos curated a spectacular book nook in the SFBU Library under Librarian Joy Gao's guidance. Student Shreya Shrestha led painting lessons with students, while Student Support Specialists Evelyn Binoya and Leslie Ji, part of the Student Success Hub, guided a conversation focused on AI and human connection, with students weighing in from many perspectives.
The day also had a larger purpose. Participants were encouraged to think about their relationship with AI and technology, and to make a pledge toward the ethical use of AI. The goal wasn't to reject technology, but to remind ourselves that technology should strengthen, rather than replace, human connection.
For a few hours, the LRC became a place to make something, meet someone, and be fully present.
Digital Detox Day is one of many ways Bayhawks connect outside the classroom on our Fremont campus, from campus clubs to hands-on events in the LRC. See what else is coming up on the SFBU events calendar, or schedule a campus visit to see the LRC and meet our community in person.
