Venkata Martha, PhD

About

Engineering Faculty

Bio

Dr. Venkata Martha is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at San Francisco Bay University. He teaches data modeling and database technologies. He brings more than 15 years of experience designing large-scale data systems and leading engineering teams. His teaching links database theory to the way production data platforms are built, scaled and run. In hands-on labs, students design schemas and build working data systems modeled on real industry problems.

Dr. Martha has held engineering leadership roles at Amazon, Walmart Labs, Indeed, HubSpot and Yahoo. At Amazon he grew a data-engineering organization from 7 to 23 engineers across three continents and led its move from on-premise infrastructure to AWS. He was the founding engineer at Lore IO, an enterprise data platform startup later acquired by Alteryx. There he built a 100+ TB distributed platform on Hadoop, Spark and Impala. He also founded Adwise, an AdTech venture. At Walmart Labs he developed algorithms that led to U.S. patents in customer analytics and merchandising.

He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. His research covered big-data processing, distributed graph storage, network mining and online privacy. With the FDA's National Center for Toxicological Research, he integrated multiple public databases into a single protein-protein interaction network. That work became part of atBioNet, a bioinformatics tool the FDA released publicly. He authored 2 book chapters, and published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers, including a Best Paper Award at IEEE SocialCom/PASSAT 2010.

Dr. Martha also holds a Master of Computer Applications from the University of Hyderabad. He is completing an MBA in Product Management and Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business. He has PMP certification and has completed MIT coursework in data science and machine learning. He is committed to mentoring and has long supported student education initiatives.
