The MSCP is a two-year program that meets on campus at San Francisco Bay University (SFBU). The 60-unit curriculum is delivered across six terms — Fall, Spring, and Summer each year — so students complete the full sequence in as little as 24 months. Classes, skills labs, and group supervision are conducted in person. Field placements are arranged at local agencies, allowing students to build relationships with local supervisors and employers before they graduate.

SFBU offers two curricular tracks that prepare students to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in accordance with the requirements established by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). Coursework builds in three stages across six terms: Terms 1–2 cover theory, ethics, and multicultural grounding; Terms 3–4 add a clinical focus — diagnosis, assessment, group work, family systems, substance use; and Terms 4–6 carry supervised practicum and internship, where students are working directly with clients in supervised clinical settings. Aligned with SFBU’s technology-enhanced pedagogical framework, courses explore cyberpsychology and AI in counseling practice, telehealth ethics, how social media and online experiences impact mental health, telepsychology best practices, and how to think critically about the AI tools now part of clinical documentation.

Upon graduation, students are not only prepared to achieve licensure as LMFTs and LPCCs, but empowered to enact positive change in their communities as competent mental health practitioners with the skills necessary for successful careers in a range of mental health settings.
