All students at SFBU must have annual health insurance coverage for each term in which they are enrolled. This includes periods when students may be on an academic break, such as winter and summer breaks, when they are on a leave of absence, and while they are outside the country. Having health insurance helps protect students from unexpected medical expenses that can create challenges to their success at SFBU. Students enrolled in a 100% online modality are exempt from this health insurance requirement.

The 2026–2027 Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is offered through Student Medicover and administered by United Healthcare (UHC). The plan is available for both domestic and international students in undergraduate and graduate programs. It includes access to United Healthcare’s national provider and pharmacy networks, as well as online tools such as HealthiestYou for general medical, mental health, and nutritional services, and Student Assist for crisis support, legal/financial assistance, and stress management.

All students must be enrolled in an annual health insurance plan. Coverage for the 2026–2027 academic year begins on August 18, 2026, and ends on August 17, 2027. Students interested in enrolling in the SHIP can proactively enroll in the plan by visiting the UHC Student Resources site. All students will be enrolled in the SFBU Student Health Insurance Plan with United Healthcare unless they submit an approved waiver request by the applicable waiver deadline. Students with Employer, Family, or Medi-Cal coverage are required to obtain supplemental Medical Evacuation & Repatriation coverage in order to meet SFBU waiver requirements. Students enrolled in eligible Student Medicover plans may qualify for an automatic waiver through the Student Medicover Plans Automatic Waiver, also known as the waiver fast-pass. For assistance with enrolling in the SHIP or submitting a waiver request, please contact sm@smcovered.com.

Students may submit a waiver request on the UHC Student Resource site
